Maximum authorized speeds are determined based on the location surrounding the road. But generally speaking, the posted speed limits in Washington State are as follows. For city and town streets, the maximum speed limit is 25 miles per hour. For country roads, the maximum speed limit is 50 miles per hour. For state highways, it is 60 miles per hour. The posted speed limits change depending on the location of the road. For example, the speed limits for curved roads are lower than they are for straight roads.

Myth #1. I will not get a ticket as long as I drive below the posted speed limit.

That is not true. As a speeding ticket lawyer, I hear this all the time from my clients. Washington State has  “Speed too Fast for Conditions” law. I am sure every speeding ticket attorney likes this law for business purposes. We encourage you to read about that rule here.

Myth #2: Drivers have to drive the posted speed limit.

This is also not true. A posted speed is the maximum speed a driver may drive. The statute does not mentioned the minimum speed drivers may drive. Although word of caution from a good speeding ticket lawyer. There are plenty of cases where drivers have been stopped for driving too slow.

Myth #3: I will not get pulled over if I drive only few miles above the speed limit. 

A posted speed limit is the maximum. I saw a case where a defendant appeared in court without a speeding ticket lawyer. Word of advice. Always hire a speeding ticket attorney. But back to the story. His defense to the judge was that he was going only 1 mile over the posted speed limit. Needless to say, he did not win. And it was not pretty. I can promise you that you will lose if you tell the judge that you were only 3 or 2 or even 1 mile over the speed limit.
